On December 17, 2019, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reinstate over 280 teachers who were sacked or suspended for opposing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) training.
The union argued that the affected tutors, including headteachers and union officials, had a constitutional right to oppose the training and the programme.
According to Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, picketing is a constitutional right, and the union demands the unconditional reinstatement of the teachers.
The TSC had accused the teachers of inciting colleagues to boycott the CBC training and of insubordination for ignoring the training.
As of April, the TSC had sacked 42 teachers for failing to attend the training and disrupting the event, while over 100 teachers remained suspended.
