On December 17, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) made a crucial decision that brought relief to thousands of passengers planning to travel by Modern Coast buses during the festive season.
Following a collision between two Modern Coast buses in Kiongwani near Salama Market on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, killing seven people and injuring over 50, NTSA had suspended the firm's operating licence.
However, after inspecting 74 vehicles, NTSA allowed 43 of them to resume operations, citing compliance with regulations by drivers and conductors attached to the firm.
According to a letter from Director-General George Njao, dated December 17, 2019, the 43 vehicles that passed inspection were cleared to operate, while the remaining vehicles were still undergoing inspection and would be cleared once deemed fit.
NTSA did not disclose the specific criteria used to clear the vehicles or what was established during the inspection.
