Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia are facing a financial crisis that has led to a go-slow by their players, who have been absent from training for the past two weeks.
The players are demanding payment of their three months' salary arrears, which the club has admitted it has not yet settled. The club's deputy Secretary General, Ronald Ngala, said they are working hard to address the situation before Wednesday.
‘’We are yet to pay them but we are working on the logistics today (Tuesday). We are feeling the pinch after our sponsor pulled out and it is understandable when the players fail to report to camp,” Ngala said.
The club has been struggling to remain afloat since their sponsor pulled out, and the players are feeling the effects of the financial crisis. In a recent interview, head coach Steve Pollack said he could not penalize any player for ‘absconding training’ since they are ‘rightfully’ demanding their rights.
The fixture between Gor Mahia and Kisumu All Stars was rescheduled after four players from the champions – skipper Kenneth Muguna, Joash Onyango, Lawrence Juma, and Clifton Miheso – were selected to represent Kenya in the ongoing Cecafa Senior Challenge tourney in Uganda.
