On December 17, 2019, a groundbreaking initiative was launched in Kenya to protect the country's endangered elephant population and promote sustainable coexistence with humans.

The 'Herd of One' initiative, a collaboration between World Wide Fund for Nature – Kenya (WWF-Kenya) and Sankara Nairobi, seeks to mitigate human-elephant conflict, which leads to devastating consequences for both humans and elephants.

Guests at Sankara Nairobi can contribute at least $1 or 100 Kenyan Shillings to support conservation efforts and socio-economic activities in elephant-rich areas.

According to Isaac Awuondo, WWF-Kenya Board Chair, 'The Herd of One initiative is a reminder that our strength to effect change lies in partnerships and unified action.'

Kenya's economy heavily relies on its wildlife resources, with tourism being the second-largest source of foreign exchange revenue. However, the country is losing nature at an alarming rate, with wildlife populations declining by over half in less than 50 years, as reported in the 2018 Living Planet Report.

Krishna Unni, Group General Manager at Sankara Nairobi, emphasized the importance of protecting wildlife species and enhancing livelihoods, stating, 'Partnerships like Herd of One provide a huge opportunity for this generation to protect wildlife species and enhance livelihoods.'
