On December 17, 2019, Kenya's Harambee Stars suffered a crushing defeat in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, losing 4-1 to East African neighbors Eritrea.
The match, played at the KCCA Lugogo Stadium in Kampala, saw Eritrea's Captain Robel Kidane, Abel Solomon Okbay, and Habte Gebremesqel score crucial goals, while an own goal from Oscar Wamalwa sealed Kenya's fate.
Despite a consolation goal from Wamalwa, Eritrea's lead was stretched further by Gebremesqel and Kidane, leaving Harambee Stars reeling.
Head Coach Francis Kimanzi had returned to the touchline after serving a two-match suspension, but his team's performance was far from impressive.
With this loss, Harambee Stars were eliminated from the tournament, paving the way for Eritrea to face either Tanzania or Uganda in the next round.
