Published on December 17, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Baringo County, Kenya, where a poisonous githeri was served to workers, resulting in the deaths of four people and leaving 13 others hospitalized.
According to reports, the workers were given the githeri as a meal after completing their work at a farm in Marigat, Baringo County. However, the githeri contained a poisonous substance that caused the workers to fall ill, with four of them eventually succumbing to their injuries.
Thirteen workers were rushed to the Baringo Referral Hospital in a critical condition, while three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The suspects, who have been held in custody for 14 days, are expected to face charges related to the incident. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, with the authorities working to determine the cause of the poisoning.
Speaking to the press, Baringo County Commissioner, Henry Wafula, revealed that the victims were young workers who had been employed at the farm. He also stated that the farm owner, Eric Omondi, may have inadvertently served the poisonous githeri to the workers.
