On Monday, the Kenya Youth Inter-Counties Sports Association (KYISA) Games kicked off at Bus County Stadium, with Team Busia experiencing a mixed bag of results.
Busia's men's soccer team, comprising players aged 18-25, got off to a disappointing start, losing 1-0 to Meru in a thrilling match watched by Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi.
The lone goal was scored by Denis Mwendwa in the 32nd minute, who outsmarted the Busia defense and goalkeeper before placing the ball in the net.
Despite creating several scoring chances, Busia's Edgar Oruchum and Ayub Onyango were unable to capitalize, thanks to Meru's solid midfield and defense.
However, Busia's fortunes changed in men's basketball, where the home team dominated Samburu 64-19, sending a strong message of their intent to win the title.
Collins Osakho emerged as the man-of-the-match, scoring 15 points, while team-mate Martin Otieno scored 13 points. Loriari Nduche scored six points for Samburu.
Busia also secured a 3-0 victory in women's volleyball against Makueni, with Faith Wekesa, Abigael Chebet, and Jenifer Wachie delivering impressive performances.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has urged organizers to consider expanding the games to include more disciplines in future championships, citing the benefits of sports for the youth.
He also emphasized the importance of inclusivity, suggesting that the games should cater to youths with disabilities to enable them to participate and potentially join the national team for Paralympics games.
With 1112 players participating in the games, action resumes on Tuesday with St Teresa Girls hosting volleyball matches.
