December 17, 2019 - King Kaka, a Kenyan musician, has been summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection with a song he released recently.
The song, titled 'Wajinga Nyinyi,' has been at the center of a controversy after Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru threatened to take legal action against King Kaka for allegedly defaming her in the song.
However, top lawyers have come to King Kaka's defense, arguing that the song is protected by freedom of speech and that Waiguru's actions are an attempt to stifle criticism.
Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi stated that no one was defamed in the song, saying, 'I said and I repeat...I will give legal representation to King Kaka against ANYONE who sues him for the lyric Wajinga Nyinyi….UGLY, CRASS and LEWD commentaries on society are PRIVILEGED.'
Another lawyer, Kipchumba Murkomen, added that public figures should not be too eager to rush to court, citing a landmark US Supreme Court decision that emphasizes the importance of free political discussion.
King Kaka released the song three days ago, and according to Waiguru, it is malicious and reckless as it implies that she is corrupt.
The demand letter from her lawyers cites specific lyrics from the song, which Waiguru claims are defamatory.
King Kaka has evoked mixed emotions online since the release of the song, with some people praising his boldness and others criticizing his lyrics.
