Body shamming has long been a pervasive issue, with many women facing ridicule and criticism for their appearance. However, one woman who has refused to let the negativity bring her down is Lizzo, the plus-size model and singer who has been named Entertainer of the Year by Entertainment Weekly in 2019.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2019, Lizzo shared her thoughts on self-love and body acceptance, saying,
SELF-LOVE ISN’T BEING DELUSIONAL…EVERY DAY I HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF TO LOOK IN THE PHYSICAL MIRROR, THE EMOTIONAL MIRROR, THE SPIRITUAL MIRROR. BUT I DON’T GO, ‘DO I LOOK LIKE THIS MODEL OR THIS ACTRESS?’ I HAVE TO HOLD MYSELF TO MY OWN STANDARDS.
Her message of self-acceptance and confidence has resonated with many, including those who have been cyberbullied for their appearance.
Recently, Kenyan socialite Huddah Monroe sparked controversy by referring to Lizzo as an elephant, sparking a heated debate about body shamming and the impact it has on women. However, Lizzo has refused to engage with the negativity, instead choosing to focus on promoting positive vibes and body acceptance.
As she shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2019,
THERE’S A LOT OF ANXIETY IN SOCIETY. I’VE SUFFERED FROM IT, AND IT’S AWFUL, IT’S DEBILITATING, I KNOW WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE. AND NOW I THINK THERE’S A NEW WAVE OF PEOPLE JUST LEANING TOWARDS SEEKING JOY. THE APEX OF POSITIVITY, I DON’T KNOW WHERE IT IS, BUT I HOPE THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING BECAUSE I GOT MORE… THERE IS A LOT MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM!
Lizzo's unwavering confidence and self-love have inspired countless women to do the same, and her message of body acceptance continues to resonate with many.
