Off-the-cuff: The BBI Process ¶
Walter Rodney's book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, tells the story of a community of African slaves in the Caribbean who were approached by white missionaries to convert to Christianity. The slaves were impressed by the idea of heaven, where everything was provided for and there was no disease, hunger, or suffering.
However, they soon realized that the white missionaries were not genuinely interested in helping them. They concluded that the idea of heaven was a lie, and that no white person would ever show an African the direction to such a nice place.
This reminds us of the behavior of our MPs, who only care about their own welfare and ignore the concerns of the voters. They are like the white missionaries, who only want to benefit themselves, not the people.
Mark Twain once said, 'If voting was as important as the leaders tell us it is, they wouldn't allow us to vote.' This is true, and it's even more relevant today, with Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga pushing for a referendum that benefits them, not the people.
They claim that the BBI process is about giving the people a say, but it's clear that they are only interested in serving their own interests. They are using the people's money to fund the referendum, and they are not willing to listen to the people's concerns.
As Lenin once said, 'When you see a politician give you a rope, it's not so that you secure your cow, but for you to hang yourself with.' This is exactly what Uhuru and Raila are doing, and it's time for the people to wake up and see through their games.
They are using the BBI process to delay and deceive the people, and it's time for us to demand better. We deserve a government that truly represents our interests, not one that is self-serving and corrupt.
