On December 17, 2019, prominent Kenyan lawyer Ahmed Nasir announced that he would offer free legal services to King Kaka, following a threat by Anne Waiguru to sue him for defamation.
Waiguru, a former cabinet secretary, had taken issue with a song by King Kaka, which she claimed defamed her. However, Nasir argued that the song was a legitimate form of free speech and that Waiguru was trying to stifle criticism.
‘I said and I repeat..I will give legal representation to @RabbitTheKing against ANYONE who sues him for the lyric #Wajinganyiyi. I’m of the considered view that no one amongst the ruling elites or the masses was defamed. UGLY, CRASS and LEWD commentaries on soceity are PRIVILEGED.’
Other lawyers and social media users have weighed in on the issue, with some arguing that Waiguru is trying to silence critics and others defending her right to sue for defamation.
