On December 17, 2019, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) clarified that the suspension of Modern Coast Express operations remained in place.
NTSA's statement came after the bus company claimed that the suspension had been lifted and that they were due to resume operations from 1pm that day.
However, NTSA's Head of Communication, Dido Guyatu, clarified that the suspension had not been lifted, contradicting Modern Coast's announcement.
The suspension was imposed following an accident involving two Modern Coast buses on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway on December 12, 2019, which resulted in the deaths of seven people and injured 60 others.
NTSA had suspended the license of Modern Coast after the accident, which occurred at 2:40am in Kiongwani, Makueni County.
Modern Coast had earlier announced that their vehicles had been inspected by NTSA and given the green light to resume operations, but NTSA's denial suggests that the inspection process is still ongoing.
