On December 17, 2019, a tragic incident shook the Moi University Main Campus in Eldoret when the body of 23-year-old Japheth Mungai was found hanging from a rope in a classroom.

According to his parents, Charles Kinyanjui and his wife, Japheth left home on Tuesday morning, despite their opposition to his travel plans. His phone went off on the same day, and efforts to reach him were futile until news of his death went viral on social media.

The family is waiting for post-mortem results but maintains that the suicide narrative was staged by their son's killers to throw police off their trail. They allege foul play and claim that Japheth was murdered.

Uasin Gishu County Police commander Johnstone Ipara stated that investigations are ongoing, and police are searching for individuals who were last seen with Japheth but have gone missing.

Cases of insecurity at the Moi University Main Campus have become a concern for students, with Japheth's death coming on the heels of another incident last month in which a fourth-year student was found dead in one of the hostels.
