Huawei Kirin 1020 Processor: A Leap Forward in Performance

On December 17, 2019, Huawei unveiled its latest flagship processor, the Kirin 1020, which marks a significant leap forward in performance.

The Kirin 1020 is the first processor to utilize the Cortex A78 architecture, providing a smooth transition to the evolving 5G network.

According to gsmarena.com, Huawei has achieved an improvement in energy efficiency and 5G connectivity with the new processor.

Its predecessor, the Kirin 990, was a notable performer, equipped with 10.3 billion transistors and 7nn Euv technology, making it the first to support 5G.

However, the Kirin 990 operates on an A76 cortex chipset, which is slightly slower than the current A78 series.

The Kirin 1020, codenamed Baltimore, is manufactured using TSMC's 5nm processor, offering better power efficiency and more stable performance.

One of the significant changes comes with the CPU cores, which are expected to provide a substantial boost in performance.

As seen, the 990 series is a far more capable performer, and the 1020 series is likely to offer even more impressive performance, especially with the Cortex A78 chipset.

That's a significant upgrade to what was already a fairly speedy SoC, giving Huawei an upper hand against competitors like MediaTek, which still rely on Cortex-A77 cores for performance.

While details about the GPU are scarce, we're hoping for a similarly big upgrade, as mentioned by gizmochina.

The 990 processor currently powers the Huawei Mate 30 series, and it's likely that the new Kirin 1020 processor will power the Mate 40 series, set to be released in 2020.
