On December 17, 2019, the body of Court of Appeal Judge James Otieno Odek was found dead in his Kisumu apartment. A police report revealed that sex-enhancing pills were found near his body.
According to a confidential police report, Odek had left his apartment alone on Friday, driven to an unknown destination, and returned late that night. A house help visited the apartment on Saturday for a routine clean-up but found no one home.
"Sometimes he drives alone," a source said, indicating that Odek's behavior was not unusual.
On Saturday, the house help rang the doorbell but received no response. It is suspected that the judge may have died on Friday.
Justice Odek was found face-up naked in his bed, with a blanket drawn up below his chest. Three sex-enhancing tablets, in a packet of six, had been taken, but it was not known by whom or when.
Further investigation revealed that blood was oozing from Odek's private parts and left ear, and a hand was bruised. The apartment had been locked from inside.
Justice Odek was a respected jurist who was handling several high-profile cases, including the Kibos pollution appeal case and the Sh2.3 billion Miwani land fraud case.
