On December 16, 2019, the body of Court of Appeal Judge Professor Otieno Odek was discovered in his house in Kisumu, just a few meters from the Central Police Station.
According to reports, Professor Odek was part of a team of judges set to listen to cases in Western Kenya. His driver had dropped him off at the house on Friday evening, but he did not open the door when the driver returned the next day.
It is believed that the judge may have died on Friday, as a domestic worker reported that she went for a routine cleaning on Saturday morning but was unable to enter the house because the door was locked from the inside.
Police were forced to break down the door to gain entry, and they found the judge alone in the house with his three phones on the bedside table.
A packet of sex enhancement drugs was found in the room, with three tablets having been swallowed. Police are unsure who took the tablets or at what time, but they note that taking three at a time can have a detrimental impact.
The report also stated that the judge was bleeding from his private parts and ears, and was found naked with a blanket drawn up to his chest. He also had a bruise on his hand.
Twitter user @HonBenard shared a disturbing image of the scene, saying "Naked body in bed, blood oozing from left ear, private part, 3 sex tablets in the room".
