On December 16, 2019, the Nairobi Securities Exchange opened the week with a total of 10.5 million shares valued at KSh.384 million, down from 49 million shares valued at KSh.1.3 billion on Friday.
The NSE 20 share Index dropped 3.79 points to 2584.04, while the All Share Index NASI shed 0.95 points to 159.57. The NSE 25 Share index fell 17.79 points to 3923.89.
Banking stocks were active, with shares worth KSh.117 million transacted, accounting for 30.54% of the day's traded value. Equity Group Holdings moved 1 million shares valued at KSh.52 million, while I&M Holdings remained steady at KSh.50.00 with shares worth KSh.15.8 million transacted.
KCB Group dropped 25 cents to KSh.52.00, moving 231,000 shares valued at KSh.12 million. The Energy & Petroleum sector had shares worth 3.3 million traded, accounting for 0.87% of the day's traded value. KenGen moved 517,000 shares worth KSh.2.9 million and closed at KSh.5.76.
The Manufacturing & Allied sector had shares worth 105 million traded, accounting for 27.38% of the day's traded value. E.A Breweries moved 510,000 shares worth KSh.98 million at a stable price of KSh.192.25. B.A.T recorded a 9.01% loss, closing the day at KSh.470.50 with shares worth KSh.6.8 million realized.
Safaricom was the day's biggest mover, with 4.8 million shares valued at KSh.145 million changing hands at between KSh.29.80 and KSh.30.30, representing 37.88% of the day's traded value.
The Bond market had bonds worth KSh.767 million transacted.
Looking back at the previous week, the equities market recorded mixed performance, with NASI gaining 0.1% and NSE 20 and NSE 25 recording losses of 1.3% and 0.6%, respectively. The year-to-date performance for the NASI, NSE 20, and NSE 25 stood at 14.3%, 8.7%, and 11.0%, respectively.
Large-cap stocks such as Standard Chartered, Barclays, KCB Group, and Safaricom drove the performance in NASI, recording gains of 3.3%, 2.8%, 1.5%, and 0.7%, respectively.
Equities turnover increased by 19.2% during the week to US$ 33.0 million, from US$ 27.7 million the previous week, taking the year-to-date turnover to US$ 1,444.7 million.
Foreign investors became net buyers for the week, with a net buying position of US$ 4.7 million, an improvement from a net selling position of US$ 0.1 million recorded the previous week.
