On December 16, 2019, the parents of Japheth Mwaniki Mungai, a 23-year-old Moi University student, spoke out at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, disputing claims that their son had taken his own life.

According to reports, Mungai's body was found dangling from a ceiling in one of the classrooms at the Moi University Main Campus in Eldoret on Saturday, with his hands tied up.

However, police believe that Mungai died by suicide, with Kesses Sub-county Police Commander Harun Muriasi stating, 'We do not have much information. We are treating it as a suicide.'

Mungai's parents, Charles Kinyanjui and Monica Mungai, have maintained that their son was murdered, with Mr. Kinyanjui saying, 'No parent would stand seeing photos of his child's body hanging lifeless on a rope. This is pure foul play and we want the police to bring to book those who killed my son.'

Uasin Gishu County Police commander Johnstone Ipara has confirmed that police are investigating the incident and are on the trail of Mungai's friends who were last seen with him and have since gone missing.
