Moiben sub-county in Uasin Gishu County was recently plagued by a stray lion that had been roaming the area for a month, causing residents to live in fear of their lives.
However, the lion's capture last month has brought back the old habits of the men in the area, who were notorious for staying out late and drinking.
According to a report by the Standard on December 17, 2019, the lion's presence had a surprising effect on the women in the area, who were relieved to have their husbands home early.
"Husbands in this area are in the habit of staying out till late, with some even sleeping in trenches in their drunken stupor. But the presence of the stray lion made them report home very early," said Cherono, a resident of Moiben.
Cherono and other women in the area were disappointed when the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) captured the lion, as they felt it was a great deterrent to their husbands' late-night drinking habits.
"They would have let it roam free. This was a great deterrent to our men who are in the habit of loitering around the villages and in drinking dens till late. Many had reformed and some were even now controlling their drinking habit," said Cherotich, another resident of Moiben.
Following the lion's capture, men in Moiben area threw a night-long busaa party to celebrate reverting to their default settings.
Local brewers, too, were in seventh heaven saying they incurred huge losses for the weeks the lion had kept drunks away at night.
