Published on December 16, 2019, a landmark court ruling by Justice Mumbi Ngugi has seen three governors barred from office over graft charges.

Justice Ngugi's ruling, delivered on July 24, 2019, stated that governors, like other civil servants, should step aside once charged for a criminal offence and their roles completely taken over by their deputies.

The Council of Governors, led by Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya, has vowed to challenge the ruling, citing it as a matter of common interest.

According to the ruling, governors Sonko, Waititu, and Lenolkulal have been charged with theft of millions of public funds through irregular procurement processes.

The Council of Governors will urgently move to court over the ruling, seeking governors to step aside when charged on corruption matters.
