On December 12, 2019, Algeria's constitutional council officially declared Abdelmadjid Tebboune the winner of the presidential election, securing 58.13% of the vote.
His nearest challenger, Abdelkader Bengrina, an Islamist, won 17.4% of the vote, while the turnout was a mere 39.88%, the lowest since the advent of pluralism.
The election was marred by huge demonstrations, with protesters opposing the poll, which they saw as a ploy by the establishment to shore up its waning power.
Notably, all five candidates approved by authorities to run had links to former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned under pressure from protests in April.
