On December 16, 2019, High Court judge Weldon Korir made a ruling in a case involving Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who is facing a Ksh.357 million graft case.

Judge Korir declined to stop the planned impeachment of Sonko, directing the parties to file a formal application regarding the intended impeachment.

George Bush and Lawrence Oyugi, representing Concerned Citizens Alliance, had made an oral application to the court, stating that some Nairobi Members of County Assembly planned to impeach Sonko due to corruption-related charges.

Additionally, the court declined to stop the criminal proceedings against Sonko for allegedly assaulting police officers during his arrest on December 6, 2019, in Voi.

The parties have been directed to serve the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) with an application seeking to stop Sonko's prosecution.

According to the petition, Sonko's rights as an accused person have been infringed, and he is not properly before the court as an accused person but a victim.

Sonko is expected to appear before a Voi court on Wednesday to answer to assault charges.
