German Agency Partners with EAC in $16 Million Deal

On December 16, 2019, the East African Community (EAC) announced a partnership with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in a $16 million (KSh1.6 billion) deal aimed at supporting economic and social integration.

The partnership, which is part of the EAC's efforts to promote regional integration, will focus on sectors such as agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and ICT. Through the SEAMPEC and Pandemic Preparedness programmes, the partnership seeks to support the EAC's regional integration goals.

SEAMPEC aims to facilitate the improvement of framework conditions to help create more competitive industries and cross-border opportunities. Additionally, the programme will work closely with the EAC to implement the Regional Contingency Plan under the One Health approach.

The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is an international enterprise owned by the German Federal Government. It operates in many fields across more than 130 countries, supporting the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.

According to The Eagle, another $3 million of the funding will go towards the 'Support to Pandemic Preparedness in the EAC Region' project, which will work closely with the EAC to implement the Regional Contingency Plan.
