On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was arrested at the Voi airstrip following an indictment by the Director of Public Prosecutions for corruption, as per an investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
According to police, Sonko's dramatic arrest led to allegations of assault against a senior police officer. He is accused of becoming abusive, unruly, and violent in an attempt to resist arrest.
Charles Owino, Director of Communications in the National Police Service, stated that Sonko's actions were 'acts of lawlessness against lawful police action.' The police plan to prefer assault and related charges against the governor.
During the arrest, Sonko allegedly obstructed police officers from executing their duties, assaulted and injured a senior police officer, and damaged media equipment.
As a result, Sonko faces additional charges for being abusive, violent, and unruly in an attempt to resist arrest.
Meanwhile, the Minority Whip at the Nairobi County Assembly, Peter Imwatok, has confirmed that Members of the County Assembly are considering tabling an impeachment motion against Sonko due to his absence, which has affected county operations.
Sonko is currently out on bond after pleading not guilty to corruption-related charges in a 357 million shillings scandal, alongside eight other suspects.
