December 16, 2019, marks a significant milestone for Harambee Stars midfielder Johanna Omollo as he has been nominated for the Community Hero award at the upcoming Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) in Mombasa on January 24.

Omollo, who plays for Cercle Brugge in Belgium, will compete against athletics coach Eric Kimaiyo, former national cricket team player Peter Ongondo, and coach Bernard Makumi for the prestigious award.

The Johanna Omollo Foundation, established in 2017, supports kids' education scholarships, mentorship, and entrepreneurship in Dandora. The foundation has provided over 80 kids with school fees and supplies, and 200 teenage girls receive sanitary pads every month.

Omollo is also a member of Common Goal, a charitable organization that donates one percent of professional footballers' and coaches' wages to non-governmental organizations working in football.

He was previously named the winner of the FIFPRO Merit Award for his outstanding community work in Dandora.

Kimaiyo, the coach of world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, was nominated for his 'good work' at his Kapsait camp, where he has given life to the former Fila athletics camp and runs a school, Kapsait Athletics Secondary School, to tap talent.

Other nominees include Peter Ongondo, who has integrated the less privileged members of the deaf society into cricket, and Bernard Makumi, who uses sports to ensure athletes with intellectual disabilities access education and economic opportunities.
