Nairobi Governorship: Senator Sakaja Ready to Take Over ¶
Senator Johnson Sakaja has expressed his readiness to take over as the Governor of Nairobi, citing the need for a leader to ensure residents receive essential services.
Speaking to K24 TV on December 15, 2019, Sakaja stated that a mini-election to choose a new Governor is a possible scenario, and he is already prepared to take on the role if the people of Nairobi demand it.
"I was elected as a Senator. However, if the people want me to, I will vie for the Governor's seat," Sakaja said.
The Senator emphasized the importance of having a leader in Nairobi to ensure that residents receive essential services, citing the county's 17 constituencies and millions of residents who require services.
Sakaja's statement comes as the Nairobi Governorship remains a contentious issue, with several leaders vying for the position. The current Governor, Mike Sonko, is facing corruption charges and has been suspended from office.
MCAs from the Jubilee and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) parties have been discussing the issue, with some calling for Sonko's removal. The MCAs are waiting for the outcome of the ongoing talks between the Governor and the leaders of the two parties.
With the Nairobi Governorship up for grabs, the stage is set for a fierce battle in the 2022 elections. Sakaja's statement has added fuel to the fire, with many speculating that he may be the next Governor of Nairobi.
