On December 16, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua recorded a statement at Kilimani Police station, citing concerns for his safety.
Mutua, the leader of the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, alleged that he has received death threats from factions of the Tanga Tanga movement, specifically naming Deputy President William Ruto, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, and Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen.
According to Mutua, the threats were made during state events at the State House, with the first incident occurring during the launch of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
During the BBI launch, Mutua claims he was conversing with Duale and Murkomen when he received threats from them.
He further alleged that he has also received threats from Deputy President Ruto himself, with the DP complaining that Mutua has been attacking him.
Mutua's concerns come amid reports of a potential alliance between Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy President Ruto, which Kalonzo has denied.
Despite these denials, Mutua released a statement saying that they will not allow the community to be sold to the highest bidder.
