As we head into 2020, it's clear that dating has become a complex and often frustrating experience. While Hollywood may sell us the dream of meeting a handsome stranger, real life is very different, and many people find themselves on disappointing date after disappointing date.
According to a recent survey, the dating landscape is filled with new terms that describe the worst behaviors. From breadcrumbing to yellow carding, these trends are something to watch out for in the coming year.
One of the most common trends is breadcrumbing, where someone leads you on by messaging with no intention of replying. More than 60% of singles say they have experienced this at some point.
Another trend is dial-toning, where someone gives you their number and says to text them, but doesn't bother to reply when you message them. This is a common pain point for many people navigating the dating world.
But it's not all bad news. According to Shannon Smith, head of PR at Plenty of Fish, there are some positive new additions to the dating landscape. 'Yellow carding' is a trend that we anticipate growing throughout 2020, where singles feel empowered to have honest discussions about what behavior is and isn't acceptable.
Other trends to watch out for include fleabagging, where you consistently go after people who are completely wrong for you; eclipsing, where someone takes up the same interests and hobbies as you in a bid to have more in common; and glamboozled, where you get all ready for a night out, only for the plans to fall through at the last minute.
It's clear that dating has become a complex and often frustrating experience. By being aware of these trends, you can navigate the dating world with more confidence and avoid some of the worst behaviors.
