December 16, 2019, marks a significant day in the ongoing Itare dam scandal, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summons 11 individuals, including the daughter of former Cabinet Minister William Ole Ntimama, Lydia Ntimama.
The DCI has been investigating the loss of funds meant to build the Itare dam, which was expected to yield 100,000 cubic meters of water per day to serve over 800,000 people.
According to the Itare development plan, the project was supposed to be completed at a cost of Kshs1 billion, but it stands at 30 percent completion.
The DCI is expected to extend its probe to South Africa, Italy, and the United Kingdom to determine how the Kshs29 billion was transacted.
Among those summoned are former board members of the Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, including Christine Ndoigo, David Kinuthia, Julius Lamaoni, Nemeul Machuki, Samwel Kaaleng, Ewoi Lochom, and Chesaina Bartonjo.
Others include Eng. FK Kyengo Barrack Amolo and David Yatich, who serve in different capacities in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
The Italian company CMC di Ravema, which was awarded the tender for the construction of the dam and has since filed for bankruptcy, is expected to wind down its operations in Kenya soon.
