On December 16, 2019, Eliud Kipchoge made history by being voted BBC Sports Personality's World Sport Star of the Year.

The 35-year-old Kenyan marathon runner achieved this feat after a remarkable year, which included breaking his own London Marathon course record and becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours.

On October 12, 2019, Kipchoge completed the 26.2 miles (42.2km) in one hour 59 minutes 40 seconds at the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, Austria.

Just six months prior, Kipchoge won the London Marathon for a fourth time, breaking his own course record by 28 seconds.

He had previously won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and had also won the 2019 World Athletics Male Athlete of the year award.

Kipchoge beat off competition from notable athletes including Simone Biles, Siya Kolisi, Steve Smith, Tiger Woods, and Megan Rapinoe to take the top spot in the online public vote.
