Published on December 16, 2019, a total of 1,300 former Administration Police Service officers have completed a two-month reorientation course at the National Police Service College in Kinganjo, Nairobi.
The officers, who were transferred to the Kenya Police Service – general duties on July 12, underwent a standardization course that started on October 24.
According to a memo sent by NPS College commandant Japheth Koome to regional and county commanders, the officers are expected to be picked up on Tuesday, December 17.
“You are requested to send means of transport to pick them on December 17 without fail,” Koome said.
The National Police Service transferred 23,900 APS officers to join their KPS counterparts in general duties, but regional and county commanders criticized the transfer before the retraining.
Following pressure from the commanders, the NPS board agreed to retrain the ex-AP officers in batches.
Deputy Inspector General Edward Mbungua directed regional and county commanders to select AP officers who would jointly retrain with their KPS counterparts.
Each of the 25 counties selected 21 AP officers, accompanied by nine KPS colleagues, for the training.
The remaining counties will select 19 APs and six KPS officers each for the training, which will continue until all officers are retrained.
“Following the NPS reforms, NPS College developed a syllabus to sensitize the incoming officers,” Mbungua said in an internal memo to regional and county commanders in October.
