Richard Muema, a father of twin boys, has been recovering at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi for over five weeks after being shot eight times by thugs in Kasarani.
On the night of the shooting, Muema had gone out to deposit money to his phone at an M-Pesa shop run by his friends. He recounts that two women were acting suspiciously in the shop before they left, and the thugs entered and ordered them to lie down.
Muema says he saw a chance to attack the thug who was brandishing a gun and hit him with a stone, but the thug started shooting at him. He remembers throwing a stone at the thug but does not recall anything after that.
According to CCTV footage, the incident occurred at 10pm, and Muema was rescued by well-wishers and taken to the nearby St Francis Hospital, where he received first aid before being transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Muema is now recuperating in the hospital's general ward and hopes to go home soon. However, he has encountered another problem as he recuperates: the fast-escalating hospital bill, which has surpassed Sh1 million.
Well-wishers can send their contributions to M-Pesa paybill number 891300, account number 36441.
