On the eve of a possible impeachment motion against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Jubilee secretary-general Raphael Tuju has revealed the party's complicated relationship with the embattled leader.
According to Tuju, the party had reservations about Sonko's candidature in the 2017 Nairobi Governor's election, but ultimately decided to field him due to overwhelming public support.
"Sonko's candidature was a bit complicated. We tried our best to ensure that the choice we took was that of the people. The people were calling out for him. Would you want to blame the party or the people who elected him?" Tuju posed in an interview with Sunday Standard on December 16, 2019.
With Sonko facing corruption charges and a possible impeachment motion, Tuju's comments offer insight into the party's decision-making process in 2017.
On December 16, 2019, Sonko was released on a cash bail of Sh15 million after pleading not guilty to over 10 corruption charges related to the alleged misappropriation of public funds amounting to Sh357 million.
