On December 15, 2019, a devastating accident occurred in Kiongwani, Makueni county, claiming the lives of seven people and injuring 62 others.
The accident involved a bus driven by Moses Wanjala, 49, who was heading to Mombasa, and Japhred Lucas, 59, who was driving in the opposite direction.
According to residents of Mukabakaba and Lutali villages in North Kakamega county, Wanjala and Lucas were close friends and often crossed paths as they traveled to different destinations.
Wanjala had been working for Modern Coast Bus Company for only one year, driving the Mombasa-Nairobi-Homa Bay route.
"We expected the Modern Coast company management to stand with the families following the tragedy but that has not happened," said Wanjala's aunt, Grace Isomi.
Following the accident, the National Transport and Road Safety Authority (NTSA) withdrew the company's license and conducted a thorough inspection of its vehicles.
As of the time of publication, more than 40 out of 88 vehicles had been inspected, and the drivers and conductors were undergoing training on road safety.
