On Saturday evening, a devastating road accident occurred along the Mumias-Bungoma highway in Soweto area, Kakamega, resulting in the loss of one life and injuries to two others.
A truck driven from Bungoma to Mumias swerved on the road, causing a head-on collision with a personal car carrying three occupants headed to Bungoma town.
According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rains pounding the area that evening were to blame as both drivers lost visibility due to the rainwater stagnating on the side of the road.
Wilfred Waswa, a witness, stated that the rainwater prompted the driver of the Probox vehicle in front of the truck to engage emergency brakes, forcing the truck driver to swerve to the other lane to avoid hitting the car from behind.
Unfortunately, on swerving, the truck collided head-on with an oncoming salon car, resulting in the driver's death on the spot.
The two passengers in the car were injured and rushed to St Mary's Mission Hospital, Mumias for treatment.
None of the four truck occupants were injured in the collision.
The accident caused a two-hour traffic snarl up on the busy highway.
The body of the deceased was later taken to St Mary's Hospital Mortuary.
