On December 15, 2019, Gavana Ann Waiguru of Kirinyaga County called for the swift arrest of leaders who have been disrespecting residents.

Waiguru made the remarks during the Jamhuri celebrations at Kiamutugu Boys Secondary School, where she expressed her disappointment at the lack of action against leaders who have been disrespecting residents.

'I am surprised that some leaders from outside this county come here to address the public and disrespect them,' Waiguru said.

'Why no action is being taken against these individuals who make a living by organizing meetings and disrespecting the public?' she asked.

Waiguru also accused some leaders of being hypocrites, saying they had previously opposed the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) but were now supporting it.

She claimed that some leaders were being rewarded for their hypocrisy, and that this was a threat to the peace and stability of the county.

Waiguru's remarks come as the county continues to grapple with the aftermath of the National Youth Service (NYS) scandal, which occurred during her tenure as Cabinet Secretary for Devolution.

Mbunge wa Gatundu Kusini Moses Kuria has been one of the leaders who have been critical of Waiguru's leadership, citing the NYS scandal as an example of her poor leadership.
