On December 15, 2019, Kenya Film and Classification Board CEO Dr Ezekiel Mutua expressed his support for rapper King Kaka's song 'Wajinga Nyinyi', which has been generating controversy.
Dr Mutua believes the song's message about grand corruption in Kenya's economy is a reflection of the country's growing democracy.
“Let people reflect on the message, but the fact that the rapper can do such production and walk scot-free is evidence that our democracy has come of age. Try that in Uganda or Rwanda and things will be different!” Dr Mutua wrote on Facebook.
While some politicians have taken offense to the song, Dr Mutua has advised them to seek legal redress if they feel defamed, but the Kenya Film and Classification Board will not interfere with the production.
King Kaka released two versions of the song, one with a sign language interpreter and another with lyrics only.
