Published on December 15, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's troubles have deepened, with the governor facing a possible impeachment as he prepares to face fresh charges of assaulting a police officer.
According to reports, Sonko has been summoned to appear at a Magistrate's Court in Voi on December 18, 2019, to answer to charges of allegedly assaulting a police officer who was executing his lawful duties during the governor's dramatic arrest on December 6, 2019.
Confirming the developments, Police spokesperson Charles Owino stated that the Director of Public Prosecution, Noordin Haji, had recommended the fresh charges against the governor.
A letter signed by the police spokesperson read in part that 'During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In this process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment.'
Four witnesses, including three police officers and the victim, have been lined up to testify against Sonko.
Meanwhile, Nairobi MCAs met on Saturday, December 14, 2019, to set the stage for the impeachment of the governor Sonko who has been barred from accessing his office as part of the bail terms.
County Assembly Minority Whip and Makongeni Ward MCA Peter Imwatok revealed that the meeting resolved to take swift action to save Nairobi county.
He was quoted stating that 'We (MCAs) have come to an agreement that Governor Sonko's problem is not Nairobi's or the county assembly's and though a section of jubilee MCA's want it to be so, we will not allow that. A majority of MCAs are in agreement that Nairobi has a problem.'
