On December 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko received a directive to appear before a Voi Magistrate court, following an order issued by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The summons come after Sonko was accused of assaulting Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub during an engagement with police officers at the Ikanga airstrip.

According to a statement by National Police Service Spokesperson Charles Owino on December 7, 2019, Sonko became abusive, rude, and violent during the arrest, injuring the senior police officer and damaging media equipment.

Sonko's arrest was linked to corruption charges, including the loss of Kshs357 million, and he was released on tough bail conditions, including a ban on social media and traveling.
