On December 15, 2019, a Nairobi-based Catholic Church sparked controversy with a banner listing types of clothing prohibited from its premises.
St Peter Claver's Catholic Church in Nairobi displayed a banner at its entrance, titled 'Mavazi Yasiyofaa Kanisani,' which translates to 'clothes that have been banned from the church.'
The banner features images of people wearing miniskirts, caps, dresses with long and exposing slits, tops that expose cleavage, sagged pants, rugged jeans, and t-shirts with unusual printings.
While the church did not specify the consequences for congregants who break the new rules, social media users expressed their opinions on the matter.
Some users questioned the church's approach, suggesting that they should have used images of individuals who were inappropriately dressed rather than generic pictures.
Others vowed to boycott the church, citing concerns about its suitability for children.
As one social media user noted, 'What you wear to a dance hall or disco should not be the same as what you wear in church.'
