Kenyan Premier League side AFC Leopards is facing another crisis as they prepare to face Tusker in Machakos on December 15, 2019. The team has been struggling financially since SportPesa withdrew their sponsorship in August 2019 following a tax dispute with the government.
Coach Cassa Mbungo, who joined the club in February 2019 and helped them avoid relegation, has reportedly served the club's management with a demand notice for unpaid salary arrears for four months (August, September, October, and December) estimated at around Sh2 million.
Having not received his dues since August, Mbungo has given the club a two-week ultimatum to settle his debt or he quits and reports the matter to FIFA.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that midfielder Tresor Ndikumana and Vincent Abamahoro have already terminated their contracts with Leopards over unpaid salaries, joining defender Soter Kayumba who recently left for Rwandese giants Rayon Sports.
Assistant coach Anthony Kimani believes the behind-the-scenes issues will not affect their performance against Tusker, saying, 'Tusker is another team that has been doing quite well. But we all know we want to start making our way back to the top of the table. And for that to happen, we must start getting maximum points from our direct competitors like Tusker.'
