On December 14, 2019, Nairobi County Assembly members held a meeting to discuss the way forward after Governor Mike Sonko was barred from accessing his office over graft charges.

According to reports, MCAs from both Jubilee and the opposition agreed to convene a special sitting where an impeachment motion against Sonko could be tabled.

Minority Whip Peter Imwatok stated, “Sonko’s problem is neither Nairobi’s nor the county assembly’s even though some Jubilee MCAs want it to be so.”

Imwatok emphasized that MCAs would not pamper Sonko at the expense of the county, saying, “We are not going to pamper Sonko like a baby to the detriment of the county just because we want to make him happy.”

Imwatok revealed that a letter requesting a special sitting had already been sent to County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi, with MCAs planning to begin collecting signatures for the impeachment motion the following week.

Embakasi MCA Michael Ogada stated, “We have no choice but to impeach Sonko, we can’t suffer for someone else’s sins.”

Meanwhile, Jubilee MCAs were expected to hold a separate meeting in Nairobi to discuss Governor Sonko’s ouster from office.

Sonko, who is accused of misappropriating taxpayers’ cash amounting to Sh357, was released on a cash bail of Sh15 million after denying over 10 graft-related charges. The court barred him from accessing his office until the case is heard and determined.
