Kenyan-born South Sudanese model Aweng Chuol has made history by marrying her gay partner, Alexis, in a private ceremony in New York.

On December 12th, Aweng and Alexis exchanged marriage vows in a small gathering of just four people, including the couple.

Aweng, a law student and fashion model, shared the news on social media, captioning a photo of the couple: "Married my best friend today. I am. GEEKED."

She also revealed that the wedding was a private ceremony, explaining: "We got married. We had three people in the room with us. And four people at the entire ceremony. It was for us. But wanted to share my happiness with y'all,"

Aweng, 21, was born in Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana, Kenya and moved to Sydney, Australia at the age of 7.
