On December 14, 2019, a dramatic incident unfolded at the Patel Coffee Estate in Solai, where workers were drilling a borehole in search of water. However, their efforts were met with a shocking surprise when the borehole suddenly produced a high-pressure stream of water accompanied by natural gas.

The gas ignited, shooting a furious fire geyser nearly four meters high, prompting the workers to panic and retreat from the scene. Their equipment, left behind, was on the verge of being reduced to ashes.

Alerted by the farm management, local authorities, including Rongai Deputy County Commissioner Julis Kavita and Sub County Police Commander Richard Rotich, were notified of the situation. Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu assured the residents of their safety, stating, "The farm management was drilling a borehole in search of water but what came out was gas in the form of fire. We have cordoned the scene to avert any disaster."

Matu further explained that experts from the geological department had been alerted to verify the type of gas emitted, but the gas had burnt out minutes before their arrival. The site was left for geologists to assess and determine if the borehole was safe for further use.

The Solai area is known for its rich volcanic history, with proximity to Menengai Crater and Lake Bogoria, which have been linked to the incident. Menengai Crater is being explored as a source of geothermal energy, while Lake Bogoria is home to hot springs.
