On 14 December 2019, the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom awarded Eliud Kipchoge, the world marathon record holder, a Doctorate Degree of Law.
The prestigious honour was bestowed upon Kipchoge in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the field of sports and his remarkable achievements as a marathon record holder.
This is not the first time Kipchoge has received a doctorate degree, as Laikipia University had previously conferred upon him a Doctorate Degree in Science during its seventh graduation ceremony.
An honorary degree, such as the one Kipchoge received, is an academic degree that is awarded by a university without the usual requirements of enrollment, a dissertation, and passing comprehensive examinations.
Typically, an honorary degree is a doctorate or a master's degree, and it may be awarded to individuals who have no prior connection with the academic institution or no previous post-secondary education.
