On Saturday, Homeboyz brought an end to Kabras Sugar's unbeaten run in the Kenya Cup, defeating the 2016 champions 20-17 in an entertaining match at Impala Sports Club.
Western Bulls claimed their third win of the season with a 15-5 victory over visiting Mwamba at the Bullring in Kakamega, while Nondescripts piled more misery on Kenya Harlequin with a 26-8 win at the RFUEA ground.
Defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) secured a crucial 15-5 victory over touring Impala Saracens at the Den in Ruaraka, while Nakuru and Menengai Oilers beat touring Blak Blad and Kisumu 36-18 and 57-18 respectively at the Nakuru Athletics Club.
Despite the defeat, Kabras Sugar earned a bonus point for not losing by more than seven points, maintaining their lead with 35 points. However, their lead was cut to one point by KCB, who failed to earn a bonus point from their victory against Impala.
Homeboyz stayed third with an improved tally of 33 points, while Impala Saracens remained fourth with 25 points. Menengai Oilers scaled one place to fifth with 24 points, displacing Mwamba.
Homeboyz led 13-3 at the break, with fly-half Evin Asena contributing two penalties to give the Deejays a 6-0 lead. Kabras Sugar's Jone Kubu pulled back a penalty, but Homeboyz extended their lead with a well-worked try by Max Kang'eri, which Asena converted for a 13-3 lead.
After several phases, Kubu landed a try for Kabras Sugar, but Homeboyz dug deep to put up a superlative defence. Substitute Abel Mutanda landed for the Deejays, and Asena added the extras for a 20-10 lead.
Winger Paul Abuto brought Kabras Sugar to within three points, but poor decision-making cost them in the last five minutes.
