On December 14, 2019, West Pokot Governor Prof John Lonyangapuo issued a warning to individuals claiming to be landslide victims in the region.
Prof Lonyangapuo urged those purporting to be affected by the tragedy to vacate the camps and risk arrest, as the government seeks to vet genuine victims from imposters.
The warning comes as a group of churches in West Pokot has embarked on a restoration program, including the planting of trees in affected areas, to reduce the risk of landslides during heavy rains.
The group is also providing free crop seedlings to encourage locals to plant trees during the next planting season, calling on well-wishers to join in their efforts.
Prof Lonyangapuo, who was distributing food and non-food items to affected families, pointed out that the number of camps has been increased to 12, with those affected by the landslide mainly from Endow, Sook, and Sekerr.
Meanwhile, transport operations in Mwingi Central Kitui county are set to improve following plans to reconstruct the Enziu bridge connecting the road from Nuu to Nguni.
The move follows an increase in the number of deaths on the bridge, with 10 people reported to have died since April last year due to flooding.
