On December 14, 2019, a middle-aged man, Rono Kipkurui Simon, was mauled by a lion in Tuala, Oloosirkon Ward, Kajiado East Constituency, Kajiado County.
According to reports, Simon had left his place of work on Friday evening destined for his residence before he went missing.
His remains were found on Monday morning, with only his head and arm found at the scene, and the lion guarding the body parts.
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has refuted allegations circulating on social media that 10 stray lions were on the loose in Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Kitengela, and parts of Karen.
‘This is not true. Members of the public are advised to ignore these false reports,’ KWS said in a statement.
As part of its efforts to ensure public safety, KWS has intensified surveillance in the area, deploying a 24-hour surveillance team to patrol the area and arrest any stray lion.
Notably, this is not the first time lions have strayed from the Nairobi National Park. In 2016, KWS officers were forced to kill a lion that was roaming on the Kajiado-Isinya road after it attacked a boda boda rider.
Similarly, in the same year, six lions strayed out of the park and wandered into Rongai and its outskirts, sending panic among residents of areas close to the park.
Just last October, KWS captured three stray lions that were spotted in the outskirts of Rongai in Kajiado County.
