Nairobi MCAs Move to Impeach Governor Mike Sonko ¶
Nairobi County MCAs have initiated plans to impeach Governor Mike Sonko following a court ruling that barred him from accessing his county offices on Wednesday.
According to Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, the MCAs agreed to call for a special sitting that could lead to the tabling of the impeachment motion. Imwatok stated that the meeting was a follow-up to another held at Windsor Hotel on Friday, where the county legislators discussed the state of the county and the way forward after the court ruling.
Imwatok emphasized that the MCAs have agreed that Sonko's problems are not Nairobi's or the assembly's problem. He added that a majority of MCAs are in agreement that there is a problem in Nairobi and that they will follow the Constitution. Imwatok stated that already a letter requesting a special sitting has been sent to Speaker Beatrice Elachi, and on Monday, they will commence the process of collecting the required 82 signatures to make the ouster motion a reality.
Embakasi MCA Michael Ogada will spearhead the collection of signatures starting Monday. Ogada stated that they have two alternatives: either they or Sonko go home. He emphasized that they cannot go home because of someone else's sins and that they will impeach Sonko.
A section of Jubilee MCAs will have another follow-up meeting in Kileleshwa on Saturday evening to discuss the same matter. One of the Jubilee MCAs who sought anonymity stated that they are meeting at a colleague's home to look at the matter and that Sonko is not the governor.
It is worth noting that Sonko is facing 19 corruption-related charges over irregular procurement and payment of more than Sh357 million in the county.
