On December 12, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded a Marsabit police officer, Jairus Mulumia, with the Head of State Commendation for volunteering to teach pupils mathematics at Forore Primary School.

According to reports, the school's teachers had failed to turn up due to security fears, leaving the pupils idle in class.

Mulumia, a trained teacher, obtained permission from the headteacher and took it upon himself to teach mathematics to Class Five pupils, with only the girls in that class having the courage to come to school that day.

His selfless act did not go unnoticed, as he was recognized during the Public Service Commission annual excellence awards prior to the presidential award.

During the Jamhuri Day Garden Party at State House, Mulumia was feted alongside other Kenyans who have made exemplary contributions to the country.

Other notable recipients of the awards included world-renowned teacher Peter Tabichi, who donates 80% of his salary to help poor children.
